INTERVIEW WITH YUNG (LAWEN STARK and SLIDE BOPPERS) upright bass player

1. How are you connected with the Jakarta scene? Did you have friends here already?

- Well, I have a friend that I met through my band's myspace profile called Tri aka Enji from Bintaro, so we kept contact and shared our music interests. Then we met in August 2009 and now in 2010 as well. He showed me around and took me to lots of Ska and Oi concerts.

2. You play rockabilly, do you like Ska and Oi! also? What do you think of the Jakarta Oi! And Ska bands?

I always had a big passion for Ska and Oi! because I used to be a skinhead in Belgium as well. I must say, the bands that I saw here are all bands of super quality!!! What I like is traditional music, so I really dig that the Jakarta bands keep the music traditional. Not only are the Ska bands great quality but the Oi bands are as well. They always offer a wild concert with lots of energy and I love the crowd going wild and singing along to the songs.

3. When will Lawen Stark and Slide Boppers make a new album?

When I return to Belgium, we are planning to record our first album. About time!! hahaha! We played around all over Europe already for 4 years now without any album so we were kinda lucky...

4. Do you have plans to play in Indonesia with your band soon?

- Well, I definitely would like to come and play in Indonesia haha.

5. I heard there's Indonesian musicians and some bands from Indonesia that are really famous in Europe, is that true?

In Europe, especially the Netherlands, of course, Indo Rock was pretty famous in the 50s and 60s. Indo Rock is a name they gave to Indonesian bands playing Rock 'n' Roll or Surf. One of my favorite bands is The Tielman Brothers. Concerning James Intveld: He is a really famous singer/song writer that comes from holland but moved to the United States. Both his parents come from Indonesia as well. He is the man behind the "Cry Baby" Soundtrack, a movie starring Johnny Depp

6. Do you have any comments for this webculturezine?

- Well, the only thing I can say is, continue what you are doing!! It's damn great hahahah!! I have a ball everytime I go to a concert here

7. Could you please tell us a little bit about your family also?

- My parents are Chinese Indonesian but they moved to Belgium to study and they stayed there. I was born in Belgium but I feel really close to Indonesia and I would like to come and live and work in Jakarta haha!
