Interview With No Mans Land





THEY ARE FROM MALANG CITY (EAST JAVA) INDONESIA

1. First of all, could you tell us about your band? When was it formed?
- Didit : No Man’s Land formed in mid of 94 as a non political band until now.

2. Who are in the lineup?
- Didit : The first line up was Me (Didit) guitar/vocal, Didik (drums), Ferry (Bass) then in 1996 we added Catur as Bass and Ferry Guitar until this day.
Ferry : Never change since 1994



3. Does the band's name have a meaning?
- Didit : For me, No Man’s Land means no one of us will live forever, so we fight today for anything we care but it can’t be your’s only responsibility will be your’s forever. Live is not only for material think but think of what you have done.
Ferry : There’s something we need to live but not we want.
Catur : The place where I belongs that will never be mine after the day I die.
Didik : We are people who live today but gone tomorrow.


4. As a band, who/what are your influences?
- Didit : The musically concept truly influenced by The 4 Skins, The Oppressed, Cockney Rejects, The Clash, The Templars and a lot of British Oi! 80’s.
Didik : Cock Sparer too
Ferry : All Oi! 80’s
Catur : For all the Founding fathers



5. As a patriotic band, what do you think about your government?
- Didit : As a citizen we’re always want the stronger government. It is danger for us when we live in a weak government which full of corruption, opportunism and discrimination in law.
Ferry : fuck to all of you opportunist politician. Eat your shit in jail when you’re got retired.
Didik : Lend me some money to enhanced the business
Catur : I don’t believe in you, you’re too much!..


6. How many albums does the band have?
- Didit : Separatist Tendency (reh.tape 1995), P.A.A.S.D.O (1996), Punk Hey Punk (split tape), Grow Away From The Society (1998), All Together Now (1999), Anti Disco League (2006) and many undetected compilation albums.

7. Please describe the sound of your band to those who are not familiar with you guys.
- Didit : Some say we played Oi! music and that’s true. We’re listen many music genre, as Me, I prefer to listen SKA, Oi! and punk 80’s. Then we combine and agree to choose musical type for NML as Oi! band
Catur : I like listen to HC Punk the bands like The Exploited, Casualties and many more and of course The 4 skins.
Ferry : Old school HardCore yeah!, but always remember the roots. Oi! music
Didik : Oi! 80’s and 90’s. The 4 Skins is great Oi! band ever and I listen to the SKA too.


8. Can you tell us about the lyrics? Are there any important messages behind it?
- Didit : Every lyrics has story (99% true story). People think that’s a simple story but it has great experience for us because it was real!, Something we’ve done, seen and felt. When you got the same feeling you can taste the noise.

9. Tell us about the scene over there
- Didit : The scene here in Malang is up and down. I think that’s natural, people will change as wind blows but not everyone could bend by the wind.
Catur : I hope I see more new faces in the scene.
Ferry : where are they now..?



10. How many gigs has the band had? Thess us about the best and the worst gig you've played.
- Didit : We never noted how many gigs we’ve done. Best gigs? Every gigs is the best as long as it could keep the culture on. Worst gigs? We never played well.
Catur : Yeah..! we never played well in every gigs we’ve done.
Didik : the sooner the better..
Ferry : I wish I could play with my own instrument


11. Have you had any problems organising gigs there?
- Didit : The biggest problems here is we are haven’t our own place. Where we could organize gig as well as the mainstream do.
Didik : Money and money again. If you have a lot of money you can do anything.


12. Have you guys ever been invited to play abroad? Which countries do you guys want to visit?
- Didit : No, when we were got much time before, we wish we could play in any other places even in Pluto. But we don’t think could do that today. Each of us has complicated problems to be solved. Many new bands were born, I think it’s your turn to carry on.
Didik : I Almost fagging out.
Ferry : We’ll play one more, two more, three more, four Oi! Oi! Oi!
Catur : I wish we could play out of the country

13. What record label is the band signed to?
- Didit : Many DIY record label has been taken part. Thanks to all the label you know, you did the right thing.


14. What are the bands short term and long term plans?
- Didit : Short term plans? We’ll release a new album under Pure Impact Records, Belgium early 2010. 16 tracks in it which 3 songs taken from our last albums. Long term plans? We will build an image that NML is not only a band but it’s an attitude for my home town.
Ferry : Keep on playing
Didik : I’m very exhaust
